--EMPOWER Event

On Friday, October 18, the Zeeland East and West football teams will meet on the football field as two of the area's top teams. Before the showdown, the Freshman and JV football players, along with each schools' cheerleaders, will come together with the zLinks program to run Zeeland Public Schools' second annual EMPOWER event for middle and high school students in the ZPS district who have a cognitive disability and/or an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The event is offered to students with disabilities in 6th through 12th grade registered through the link provided. Registered students will be partnered with a Freshman or JV football player or cheerleader who will serve as their mentor/teammate for the event.  Each participant will receive a shirt, participate in football drills and have the experience of scoring a touchdown, or participate with cheerleaders who will cheer on the players during the event.

The event is free of charge for participants but all spectators must pay the $5.00 gate fee which also includes watching the East/West varsity football game that kicks off at 7:00pm.  Gates for the EMPOWER! event will open at 4:15pm, with a start time of 4:45pm. Participants should arrive no later than 4:30pm.  The event will conclude around 5:45pm with the awarding of medals. Pizza and drinks will be served following the completion of the event for all participants on the south end of the stadium. T-shirts will be on sale prior to the event for $10.  All proceeds will go to the  zLinks program and their unified sports initiative.

The EMPOWER! concept is based on the Victory Day games started at Trenton High School in 2010. Trenton’s football coach, who overcame cancer, sought to make his community and the world a better place by challenging his football players to think outside themselves.
