We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2017-18 educational progress for the Lincoln Elementary School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. For the 2017-18 school year, schools were identified definitions and labels as required in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). A Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) school is one that has at least one underperforming student subgroup. An Additional Targeted Support (ATS) school is one that has three or more underperforming student subgroups. A Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school is one whose performance is in the lowest 5% of all schools in the state. Some schools are not identified with any of these labels. In these cases, no label is given, as was the case with Lincoln Elementary School.

PROCESS FOR ASSIGNING PUPILS TO THE SCHOOL - In district and out of district requests for placement are honored based on availability within each grade level. Parents are asked to list their top 3 choices of school placements if they do not live in the ZPS boundary area. This process usually takes place in late spring and parents are notified of placement in May or June for the following year. These forms for requests can be found on district and building web sites and submitted to the Zeeland Public Schools Central Administration Office. Out of district families are required to submit their requests each year, even though we attempt to keep students in the building they were previously assigned to. Due to housing the “east track” of Spanish Immersion classrooms, we have a number of students attending Lincoln from Adams and Woodbridge Elementary Schools due to parent request for their children to participate in this program.
THE STATUS OF THE 3-5 YEAR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN - Lincoln Elementary continues to work on our school improvement plan to help students achieve the necessary skills for success in reading, writing, math science and social studies. This plan included specific strategies and activities for Tier I, II and III instruction. In addition to academic goals in each content area, Lincoln has integrated both nutritional and social and emotional goals into our school improvement plan. Through a two year IHSIP (Integrating Health Into Your School Improvement Plan) grant from MEMSPA and the State of Michigan, we have funding and educational resources to implement educational activities in these two areas. This comprehensive plan is available for review on our building website. Here are a few highlights and updates of where we are in our plan:
Completing our 4th year of peer observations/classroom walkthroughs to bring common language and best practices to all classrooms.
Implemented the Michigan Model Lessons around Nutrition and Social & Emotional Health.
Write Well Writing Curriculum for greater consistency in writing instruction.
New formative assessment questions in math to drive our math workshop instruction.
Professional development around quality math instruction and use of DEAL, a problem solving strategy that is used K-5 for common language and expectations.
Continuation of a 90 minute literacy block that includes lessons for vocabulary, accuracy, comprehension, word study and fluency.
Mystery science lessons for greater hands on / scientific learning process.
UNIQUE TO LINCOLN - Lincoln continues to offer students the option of Spanish Immersion as well as traditional instruction. Lincoln will continue to be a “3 section” building, but one of the sections at each grade level will be taught completely in Spanish. We are one of the smaller schools in the district due to lack of land and new housing.
Lincoln has implemented CHIX TIX as our formal PBIS system for recognizing and reinforcing student behavior as posted on our behavior matrix. This compliments our character trait award program which rewards student who meet established and published criteria in the areas of respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, generosity and good citizenship. Percentages of students earning these awards by the end of the year are as follows:

Lincoln continues to run our annual Fitness Frenzy Fundraiser each September to generate additional funds for grade levels, classrooms and teachers. This event is a day filled with active, fitness oriented activity, including a walk a thon, where students get sponsorship for participating. Typical fundraisers only involve between 40-60% of the students, where this event involves every Lincoln student and every student walks away from the event with a memento of the day. Monies raised help fund the following:
- field trip transportation for every grade level
- event admission funds (field trips)
- partial scholarships on field trips for those in need
- published periodical for every student each month through the year
- sensory tools for special needs students
- books for the Just Right Library
- Spanish books for the library
- character trait program that runs throughout the year
- walk program during February and March
- supports teacher special requests
THE CORE CURRICULUM
This is based upon the State of Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations and National Common Core Standards. This information is available at our school office or on our district website. Zeeland Public Schools makes sure our students are provided challenging lessons that are consistent across grade levels. A team of Zeeland educators regularly evaluates and revises our curriculum to ensure that classroom lessons meet state requirements for kindergarten through twelfth grade. Our district has made the transition to the National Common Core Standards in math and English Language Arts.

% Reading At/Above Grade Level on Fountas & Pinnell Running Records – End of Year and includes our Spanish Immersion students which is a primary factor for lower grade level scores than previous years. Our immersion students typically begin below grade level and can take a few years to get up to benchmark.

CONFERENCE INVOLVEMENT – Just over ninety-six percent of Lincoln Elementary students’ parents attended our parent-teacher conferences in the fall of 2017-2018. Spring conferences continue to be reserved for those students who a meeting is requested by the teacher or the parent.
VOLUNTEERS AT LINCOLN - This incredible continued donation of time and work on your part exceeded last year’s total and is a big reason Lincoln has a strong “family” feel. We accounted for 620 different volunteers contributing to Lincoln with just over 5,221 hours of work. We are so thankful to be blessed with this incredible partnership!
